Makers of VRChat have secured $80 million in a Series D round funding led by Anthos Capital, with numerous other participating investors.

An official press release announced that the company intends to expand its current services, currently provided to over 40,000 concurrent users. This investment is said to be used to accelerate the creation of a creator economy, create a system that will make social discovery among VR users more meaningful, and expand the software to a variety of VR platforms.

This $80 million investment is huge for the community as the developers only ever worked with a fraction of this amount before. As in their previous round of funding, VRChat only raised $4 million. Given the fact that the game has also been in early access ever since its release in 2017 signifies that it is due for major updates.

The free-to-play title is by far the most successful virtual reality ‘game’ that has hit the market. While being mostly a social platform than a traditional game, VRChat ranks as one of Steam’s most positively rated games.

The rise of VRChat has become a somewhat unexpected success in the world of VR, with numerous events elevating it to the mainstream, such as the infamous abridged Knuckles trend. While the virtual gaming scene has been somewhat bearish and downhill, social VR platforms like VRChat and VR Casinos seem to be the ones that gain the most traction.

Features of VRChat:

  • Full body avatars with lip sync, eye tracking/blinking, and complete range of motion
  • Express yourself with hand gestures, emotes, and emoji
  • Our 3-D spatialized audio helps you hear the conversations important to you
  • Play Capture the Flag, Battle Discs, Bowling, and more including community built games
  • Chat, collaborate, draw, sculpt, or watch videos with family and friends
  • Create your own avatars and worlds with our Unity SDK
  • Explore hundreds of worlds created by other community members
  • Get involved with official and community events
